I'm John Clifford, a writer from Cleveland, OH (or thereabouts).
I write novels, stage plays, screen plays, comic books, and whatever else fires my imagination. Here I'll be posting random bits & bobs, as well as updates on my larger projects.
Said larger projects currently include...
MY MYSTERIOUS FANTASY NOVEL: Wizards, dragons, yada yada.
VICARIOUS: In the world of “Vicarious”, a new fad has the wealthy hiring ‘vicaris’, mostly struggling college students, who provide vicarious life experiences by phoning in poetry describing their thoughts and feelings at significant moments throughout each day. But what happens when two young vicaris think they might be falling in love, only to find that their employers were once lovers as well—and may never have gotten over their breakup 30 years ago? When everyone is living someone else’s story, can anyone find a happy ending? And when everyone is living for someone else, is anyone really living at all? (Stage play, currently being submitted to theaters and contests, both locally and across the US.)
CHARMING: What would life really be like a world of fairy tales? Could real lives, with real people in them, ever live up to such stories? And what happens to happily ever after…when you know better? These are the questions explored in my new play “Charming”, an irreverent retelling of the Cinderella story—and several other classic tales along the way! (Also stage play, currently being submitted to theaters and contests.)
ROUNDTABLE: A group of comic book style supeheroes start an after school community service club for junior high schoolers. But shouldn't they be busy saving the world or something? Part live action saturday morning cartoon, part mystery, part modern retelling of the Arthurian legend. (Film script, suitable for family audiences, currently being prepped for studio submission.)
THE MIRROR WAR: A fantastical space opera, set in a science fiction universe where science itself is over-ruled by magic. Where stellar sailing ships, space balloons, clockwork rockets, and knights on winged horses do battle around castles carved from asteroids. Where dragons chase comets and eat them to fuel their fabled fiery breath. Where tyrants project their propaganda into your very nightmares, and where a young Queen, leader of the Fellowship of Free Worlds, looks to a most unorthodox source to free her galaxy. It’s Star Wars, as imagined by JRR Tolkien and William Shakespeare. (Comic book. A 12 issue miniseries is fully outlined, and the script for issue one is complete. Currently seeking an artist.)
